On August 11, 1968, the Beatles founded their record label, Apple Records, Ltd.
Many years later, when the computer company Apple Inc. started selling music online, they weren’t allowed to sell any of the Beatles’ music despite Steve Jobs being a big fan because of a dispute over the similar company name. In fact, Apple Inc nèe Apple Computers was sued three times by Apple Corp, the parent company of Apple Records; this series of lawsuits lead to the famous (infamous?) alert sound name sosuime.
Eventually, Apple Corps lost their case in a UK court around the same time their CEO, Neil Aspinall, retired. With new leadership at the helm, there were hints that the Beatles work would eventually be sold in Apple Inc’s iTunes Store, which did, in fact, happen in 2010, roughly three years later than anyone had reason to believe it would happen.
